Getting married in Antigua Guatemala means cobblestone streets, colonial arches, gardens and volcanoes on the horizon. It is also a destination that rewards careful planning: the weather, the venues, the logistics and the timing are different from anywhere else. This guide gathers what you should keep in mind, drawn from more than 30 years of organizing events and catering services.
Why Antigua Guatemala is so special for a wedding
Antigua Guatemala is a UNESCO World Heritage city. Its ruins, churches, colonial houses and gardens, with the Agua, Fuego and Acatenango volcanoes on the horizon, turn almost any corner into a perfect photo backdrop. Sitting at about 1,500 meters above sea level, it also enjoys a mild climate for much of the year.

When to get married: dry season and rainy season
Your date shapes almost everything: venue availability, the weather, even the mood of your photos.
- November to April (dry season): clear skies, ideal for outdoor ceremonies and receptions and for photos with the volcanoes. It is also the busiest season, so venues and vendors book up far in advance.
- May to October (rainy season): the landscape is greener and there is usually more availability. Rain tends to arrive in the afternoon or evening, so have a covered plan B or a tent, and schedule the ceremony early.
- Special dates: during Holy Week and the end of the year the city fills with visitors, there are processions and closed streets, and traffic and lodging get complicated. If your date falls then, plan guest and vendor logistics earlier.
Types of wedding venues
In and around Antigua there are options for every style:
- Colonial gardens and houses: intimate and full of charm, ideal for mid-sized celebrations.
- Estates and countryside venues just outside town: more space, lots of greenery and open views.
- Hotels and historic buildings: comfort for your guests with a colonial atmosphere.
- Ruins and heritage sites: spectacular, but with their own rules for setup, schedules and sound.
- Halls and covered spaces: the safest choice if you want to guarantee the celebration whatever the weather does.

Antigua venues where we cater events
- Colonial ruins: Convento de Capuchinas, San José el Viejo, Santa Clara, San Jerónimo, La Recolección, La Compañía de Jesús and the San Agustín ruins.
- Gardens: Jardines de San Francisco.
- Any other venue in Antigua you have in mind: we adapt to the space you choose.
Each venue has its own rules for setup, schedules and availability, so it is worth confirming them early. Tell us which one you like and we will guide you.
Questions to ask before booking a venue
- What is the real capacity, seated and standing?
- Is there a plan B if it rains?
- Until what time are music and sound allowed?
- What is vendor access like, and where do guests park?
- Is there a kitchen or service area for the caterer?
- Are there setup restrictions because it is a historic site?
- Is there enough power for music, lighting and the kitchen?
The banquet: options and what to plan for
The banquet is one of the most important decisions of your wedding: it is what your guests remember most. It can be a plated dinner, a buffet, food stations, or a cocktail with a dessert table. See ideas on our menu inspiration page.
In Antigua it also pays to think about logistics: cobblestone streets with limited vehicle access, setup times, and the distance between where the food is prepared and the venue. We are based in Jocotenango, minutes from Antigua, and we bring our service to the whole country.
- Setup and breakdown times at the venue.
- Kitchen or service area available.
- Number of service staff for your banquet style.
- Tableware, linens and furniture.
- Drinks with and without alcohol.
- Menus for special diets or allergies: we offer them.
Before deciding we recommend a tasting: at Cesco Banquets we offer one, along with menus for special diets. It also helps to talk through the timing of each moment of the wedding.

Coordinating food, staff, decoration, drinks, music and furniture with separate vendors can be exhausting. At Cesco Banquets we take care of all of it with a single team, tailored to your budget. Learn more on our weddings page.
When to start planning
Ideally start 12 months or more ahead, especially if you want to marry in the dry season. That said, we also cater events on short notice: write to us and we will confirm availability. The first steps are to set a budget, choose a date and venue, and get a quote for the banquet. To see what to do and when, use our free wedding planner: enter your date and we show you the deadline for each step.
Marrying as a foreign couple
Requirements for foreign couples can vary, so confirm the legal steps with the relevant authorities or a local notary well in advance. Many couples handle the legal paperwork separately and hold the celebration in Antigua.
Guests coming from other cities or countries
Antigua is about 45 kilometers from Guatemala City, roughly an hour depending on traffic, and La Aurora International Airport is in the capital. If you will have guests traveling in:
- Share transfer and lodging information early, and consider booking a block of rooms.
- Let them know about the weather and what to wear, especially for chilly nights.
- Consider transportation between the hotels and the venue.
- Tell out-of-town guests what is happening in the city on your date (for example, Holy Week).
